VISIT TO LONDON DOCKS. THIRTEEN MILES OF BERTHS. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, June 9. The Prince of Wales to-day made a tour of the London docks.
After inspecting the headquarters of the Port'Authority, he went down the river visiting, among other docks, the Royal Victoria and Albert, the King George the Fifth, the London and St. Katherine docks, and watched shipping loading and unloading at thirteen miles of berths.
The Prince also visited several warehouses and vaults, displaying ’the greatest interest in the varied activities of the..great port-.
The Port of London Authority controls the tidal portion hf the Thames below Teddington -lock, a distance of 69 miles (the total length of the river is -210 miles). In 1930 th e value of the Port’s overseas trade was £603,743,000, representing over one-third of Britain’s rparithne trade. The Port iis served by the' following docks;—
iSt. Katherine’s dock, 23j acres, which handles shells, tea, canned goods, hides, and perfume. s London dock, 100 acres (ivory, spices,rubber, wine, wool, marble, and general Continental and traffic). ) Surrey Commercial docks, 3i 6 acres (timber, grain, and Canadian produce). " West India docks, 242 acres jrufn, sugar, grain, hardwood, and fruitT. " j Mill wail docks, 231 acres (the principal centre of the grain trade). " East India docks, 67J acre-s (South’ African and West Indian traffic). I Royal Victoria and Albert docks,.9l6* acres (frozen and chilled meat, grain, and--tobacco).
King George V. dock, 186 acres (piovides accommodation for the largest vessels afloat).
Till bury docks, 675 acres (used principally by vessels plying on the, Australian, Indian, and other Eastern routes ; the landing stage, 26 mile-s below London Bridge, provides accommodation for liners at all states of the tide, and has direct rail connexion with London, the Midlands, and -Scotland),.
