WIN FOR LABOUR
IN QUEENSLAND DEFEAT OF GOVERNMENT. ( Australian Press Association! BRISBANE, June 12. The Queensland State elections have resulted in the defeat of the Moore Nationalist Government, and the victory of the Labour Party. A Labour Party majority of .about four seats in the New Parliament is ■regarded as ;certain. An early [morning check this • morning disclosed - -'that the"-Labour Party has won thirty-one seats, the Government parties twenty-two, and the In dependent oh<‘ , . ;n ' ’■ '•' The doubtful seats were then eight Neither the Queensland Party, the Langites, nor the Communists won anj seats. The present figures reveal a pronounced swing against t’’e Government, particularly in Brisbane metropolitan area. In some cases in the metropolitan area the Nationalists’ majority has completely vanished... In other cases their majority has dwindled so perilously that the sitting members ate not the- least optimistic about their prospects of re-election. So far two Cabinet Ministers have gore down, including Mr Neil M'tcGroarty. the Attorney-General, and Mr A. Atherton, Secretary of Mines. The Premier, Mr Moore, however, is safe. The Labour Loader, Mr Forgan Smith, has a substantial majority at Maokay. g«.Labour so far has not- lost a single seat.
STATE OF THE PARTIES. BRISBANE, June 12. The latest figures as to the (state of the parties are: — Labour 29 Government 27 Doubtful 2 In the last Parliament the strength of the parties was as follows: Government 44 Labour 26 independents . - The Redistribution Act reduced the number of seats by ten, leaving the parties as follows. Government 41 Labour 19 Independents 2
THE LATEST REPORTS. LABOUR’S WORKING MAJORITY. (Received this day" at 9.25 a.m) Brisbane, June 13. Although eight seats are Stiil doubtful, labouf is expected to have a clear working majority in the new Queensland Parliament. On the latest ohock they have already definitely won thirtytwo seats in a House of sixty-two, and may secure one of two doubtful seats. The Government suffered a severe reverse in the metropolis, losing eight seats. They did better in the country but at least four changed over. AH doubtful seats are in the country.
The present state of the parties is Labour 32; Government 21*; Independents 1; doubtful 8. The advent of the new Labour Government creates a new problem for the Commonwealth Government.
