WOMAN PAYS THE PENALTY,

HUSBAND SENT TO GAOL

DUNEDIN, June 1

Pleading guilty to five charges of theft of handbags' ;containing money from customers inj city shops, Florence May Beatie, married woman, middleaged, was sentenced in the Police Court to one year’s reformative detection. ; Her husband, James Watson Beatie, was sentenced to three months’ gaol on': one charge of receiving £3 from her.

The Magistrate remarked that Beatie must have been aware of his wife’s criminal practice in bringing bags home. The-police stated that there had been repeated complaints, one lady losing a bag containing £l2. They found nineteen, bags at accused’s home, she admitting the theft of thirteen.
