Tn the British ladies’ golf' championship, first round, Scotswomen were respon/ ilne for surprises, including the ■defeats of the American champing Hicks, and three other members of the American international team, and a,II the French competitors. , • Miss Susie To'-hurst (Australia) defeated Miss Diana Fish wick.' the British international, ami also the lady champion of 1950, at the 19th hole. y|iss Tolhni'-t played splendid golf and took full advantage ot her opponent's mistakes during the first- nine holes, for Mis.s Fishwick was not driy- . •ing well 1 . Miss Tolhmvst with two up and four to play, took three putts on . each of the next two greens, and the match wavs .squared at the sixteenth. | Two halves followed. Miss Fi.shwick took four to reach the nineteenth green, and Miss Tolliur-st. playing a cool game, won the-match.
