WISH TO AVOID ARREST
SEQUEL TO AUCKLAND RIOTS

AUCKLAND, May 31
Either this afternoon or to-morrow, James. Henry Edwards, the Communist; leader, will surrender to the police. Sine© the night of the rioting hi Auckland the police have searched systematically, but unavailingly for Edwards. On the night of the 'hot Edwards was batoned by the police and treated for -a head injury at the Auckland Hospital. He came back to the city and then disappeared. It transpired that Edward's injuries were fairly serious, hut that he has now recovered. His friends diseased the position with an Auckland barrister this morning and afterwards announced that, in order to avoid arrest Edwards would •surrender at some suburban police station.
