ROSS NEWS
(From our own Correspondent).
On Monday about mid-day a very serious accident happened while logging in Messrs Stuart‘and Chapman’s LtcL- bush at Waitaha when Mr W. A. Smith of Ross was struck on the head by a falling bough causing a fracture of the skull. It appears that a tree had been felled and in falling came in contact with another tree when a large tough some 5 or 6 inches in diameter wa,s broken off and hung on the second tree, some 50ft. from tlie ground.
While cross-cutting the top end cf the fallen tree it wash necessary to work immediately under the hanging bough and before this work was completed the bough dropped to the ground striking Mr Smith on the back of his head. rendering him unconscious His mates immediately had him conveyed to his home in Ross where Hr. Wilson was quickly in attendance. The sufferer was conveyed to the Westland Hor-pit.il where he still lies in a precarious condition. General regret is felt for this urn fortunate accident as Mr Smith and his family have had more than their share of accidents and illnesses in the past year or two.
