ISLAND FRUIT
LARGE CARGO FOR N.Z
(By Tthyraph—Per Press Association)
WELLINGTON, May 30
An exceptionally large amount of fruit, said to be the biggest carried since site entered the Pacific Mail Service was brought by the Monowai. Her fruit cargo, some of which was stacked on sheltered portions of the deck, amounted to about 15,900 cases of bananas and oranges, being mostly oranges. So far as could be gathered this morning, the fruit was in perfect condition. The Islands’ fruit season extends over about six months of the year, and each of the two mail steamers in the Sydney-San Francisco service usually carries two big cargoes during the season. The Makitra, on her last southern trip, before being withdrawn at Wellington for overhaul, carried a larger quantity than that brought by the Monowai today.
