URGE TO FLY
SAFETY IN THE All!
ADDRESS TO TRAVEL MEN
WELLINGTON, May 28
Any third-rate south American republic puts New Zealand to gliaine in the development of aviation,” said Alp ( A. W. Nisbet, secretary of the .Wellington Aero Club, in an address at. the monthly' luncheon of the Travel Men’s League at tiie Midland Hotel yesterday. Mr Nisbet added that, the apathy of lot a) bodies organisation 111 tile. '. Dominion required considerable development. . “Local bo vies have either placed ob- . 'stacles in the way ofestablishing aero- . dromes, or they have, made., exorbitant charges for grounds which, have been provided,” Mr Nisbet continued. The speaker contended that air travel was not a competitor with older established methods of transport. Commercial aviation was to bo regarded as complementary to surface transport. .. Mr . Nisbet remarked that the accident, rate in aviation was greatly exaggerated in the minds of. most people. There was still sufficient novelty about, flying to direct undue attention on aviation accidents, and nothing was heard pf. the clockwork regularity of air .lines in the | United States and Europe. A summary of statistics in the United States revealed that the peril of the passenger in established air lines was insignificant. The average club or. pr>, vate pilot was engaging in a pretty safe activity, but for commercial Ayr ing the highest qualifications were- demanded. . I]
“In my opinion the piipt flying over Wellington on a Sunday afternoon is much safer than the motorists on the Hutt Road,” said Mr Nisbet. In illustration, the speaker remarked that the Wellington Aero Club’s machines had flown 182,000 miles to date. There had been onlv one accident involving a qualified pilot. Mr Nisbet said that avi'tion would not progress in Now Zealand until people were divorced from the idea that a flight was an adventure. “There are still many people who insist on ataching a great deal of glamour to the aviator and they regard him with awe as though lie was a being from another planet,” Mr Nisbet said. •
