MINISTERIAL VISIT,
On Friday afternoon the Hon. C. E. Macmillan, Minister of Mines, accompanied by the Under-Sed’etary, Mr Kimbell, and the Inspector of Mines, Mr Scoble, met a deputation at the Coronation Hall consisting of representatives of the Ross Unemployment Committee ‘and the Ross Prospecting Association, the Mayor, J, Murdoch E?q., occupying the. chair. The Mayor extended a hearty welcome to the party, and brought- under their notice the necessity for placing prospectors on approved' areas and providing proper .supervision over the work. At present some 25 prospectors were working in the Rbss district under the relief schemes, but without practical men in charge it was not likely that ’much good would result. There was a largo area at the hack of Ross that it was thought would prove to be one of tlie best prospecting ve.> tures on the coast, providing it was prospected in a systematic manner and they wished to know if th© Mini-stei could assist by supplying an expert to report on the area and if approved of to supply supervision over the various parties of miners engaged. Messrs R. J. Scott and G. H. Chapman also spoke endorsing the Mayor s
request. At the Minister’s request Mr Kimbell explained the system that had been adopted in several other mining centres which he suggested might be followed in Ross. The Minister said the request would have his hearty .support. He would arrange for their geologist, Mr E. M. McPherson to visit Ross at an early date and report on the 'area mentioned and if favourably reported on,.'arrangement would be made for suitable supervision over the prospectors. In the meantime the area mentioned woui'd be reserved for unemployment prospectors. The Minister also promised to consider the matter of subsidising the funds raised by the Prospecting Association, but this could not be done till after Jun© 30th. A further request for the re-opening of the Warden’s Court at Ross once a month would 'also be investigated. Mr J. O’Brien M.P.. who had. introduced th© deputation, thanked the Minister for his patient ' -hearing and his favourable promises. . The party 16ft about 4 p.m. on route for Greymouth. •
