GORED TO DEATH
MADDENED COW RUNS- AMOK
MOTHER WITNESSES SON’S FATE,
LONDON, May 26,
Running amok in the densely-popu-lated working-crass district of Shawroad, Oldham, a frenzied cow gored a boy to death, and tossed and injured three people.
The dead boy was James Storey, the four-year-old son of a packer, oi ‘Hesyjctreet, Oldham. \ The cow, withqqtheiv cattle, was being driven from Mffiiips ■ Station to a ■slaughter-house- in Bowe.s-street when it took fright.
At the junction of Cross-street *tattacked Mr Standring, 73, who was walking down Huddersfield-road It tossed him into the air and he .fell heavily to the ground.
Thoroughly maddened, the cow next dashed along in and out of a network of streets of working class cottages, imperiling the lives of pedestrians and stampeding the crowd. Many women, overcome by terror and fear for the isafety of their children, fainted.
One man, Mr Tom Howarth, 49, of Bridgwater-sti'eet, was gored on the forehead as lie climbed the parapet of a bridge to escape.
On the other side of the bridge Mi’s Liiy Hilton, 23, of Bartlemore-street, was walking with her husband when the cow butted her in the back and tossed her into the air. It went on into fiesse-strect, where Mrs Storey’s little .son had- run out into th 6 street to play. His mother was -horrified to see the cow p’n him to the wall. The cow gored the boy iso severely that one of its horns was torn away.
Eventually the animal ran into a cul-de-sac and was shot.
