WELLINGTON, May 27,

“Although this is., only a. .vagrancy case, I would ask that the bail should •be substantial,”, yaid Sub-Inspector Ward, when Phillip Gordon Brazier, an ex-Coniniunist, aged 25 years, who was charged with being, idle and disorderly, in that he had insufficient lawful means of support, asked for a remand in order to secure witnesses.

The Sub-Inspector saifl that the police regarded Brazier as one of some dangerous agitators who were going about endeavouring to cause disorder. MY Page, S.M., granted a remand for a fortnight. He fixed the bail at £l5O, and one surety of £l5O.

As a sequel to the recent Extensive raid's by the police, thirty-four charges alleging breaches of the Licensing Act are being heard in the Magistrate’s Court.

So far three oases have been dismissed, while David Isaac, manager of a men’s outfitting shop, was fined £2 with costs, for selling liquor in a no-license area. Herbert McDowell boarding house keeper, on a similar charge, was fined"£4o, with costs.

FOUR YEARS’ HARD LABOUR.

NEW PLYMOUTH, May 27.

Christian De Rink, who was convicted for discharging a shot gun at police officers while they were attempting to arrest him, and for assaulting officers in an attempt to resist arrest at Tikorangi was sentenced to four years’ hard labour. Mr Justice Reed commended Detective A. B. Meiklejolm and Constable J. A. Tucker on their pluck and tact in arresting the man with a load, ed gun. His Honour described De Rink as a dangerous character, and express, od the hope that he would be deported at the conclusion of his sentence. De Rink is a Frenchman.

YOUNG ROBBERS SENTENCED WELLINGTON, May 27

Osric Nonnan Meech, and George Alexander Rait, two youths, who have been converting cars and going about robbing tills, were each admitted to three years’ probation by Mr Page, S.M. They were ordered to pay £3 os each as restitution, and 5s 6d costs. Patrick Stanlius Blake was jointly charged and was remanded on the application of counsel, who had applied for the removal of his case to the Children’s Court, and had been refused.

SENTENCE FOR MANSLAUGHTER. NEW PLYMOUTH. May 27. At the Police Court Piknu Pokau was scut- to tlic Borstal for a. term not exceedng two years for the manslaughter of Reginald Duggan through his negligent driving of a car at Hawera. He was prohibited from driving for five years after his leaving the Borstal. .

INDECENT ASSAULT. NEW PLYMOUTH, May 27. . At the Police Court, George Roberts aged ,60, was sentenced to 12 months’ hard labour, and was ordered to pay £23 costs, or in default serve a further three months’ for indecently assaulting a girl at Hawera.
