SKELETON FOUND
DISCOVERY AT OTAHUHU PARK
AUCKLAND, May 25
A human skull and other parts of a skeleton were unearthed by relief workers engaged on excavation work at Sturges Park, Otahuliu. The condition of tho remains, which, unfortunately, were broken by the "■or^'' «■<?•’ tools, indicated that they had been buried in the distant past. Tlie topoi the skull was unusually long and flat, with a low \ receding forehead. Parts cf the jaws recovered intact were complete with strong,- even teeth. The remains were uncovered in’ a scoria stratum about 3ft. below the surface of the highest cone above the crater. The crater is said to have been a pa in the earliest Maori days. Tribal wars are said to have been waged incessantly in this vicinity, anc ; the spot where the skeleton was discovered is commonly believed to have been a burial ground, A complete skeleton Avas nilearthed iil the sdlnfe locality ilbotit three years ago, and is how in tile- Auckland MUseuiil. From tile evidences of buri al rites ‘theft Uhearthed these remains Were believed to be those of a Maori of high rank. The skull has a distinct fracture, indicating that death had been met in battle and caused by an early Maori weapon. It is intended to have tlie recently discoA-ered skull examined by authorities to determine the date of burial.
