The Guardian And Evening Star, with which is incorporated the West Coast Times. THURSDAY, MAY 28, 1932. PROSPECTING PROPOSALS.

The suggestion by the Minister of Aimes at the recent deputation, to utilise unemployed in prospecting work, under competent leadership, is half a loaf in respect to State prospecting which i.s- better than none. ’ All the details are not worked out, but there is the germ of a good idea, in the proposal if practical work is the final outcome. There are areas between Hi mu and Ross which have been tested only part.}'. Other ground is locked up by the State Forest, in that locality. All this country is worthy of testing, and if a practical leader is in charge of the work, good results are possible. The opus for the details is thrown on the Prospecting Association which should lose no time in formulating what the Minister asks for. No doubt the Association will incur some expenditure in this matter, but if a reasonable scheme is 1 undertaken, we are sure the public and business jieople will help with further finance. There is the possibility of auriferous payable ground being found in the locality indicated, and if a find is made it will create a useful stir. Generally, mining pursuits are being taken up very actively. It was mentioned at the County Council meeting yesterday that there was a revival and great enterprise shown in Okuru, a remote locality. In the Totara district, also, there is very general activity, while sea beach mining is likewise a growing vogue. In the latter connection the Minister of Mines has indicated lie will approve onlj of o,dinary area claims, and net sanction ..special claim areas which tend to a monopoly. That action is approved when it is realised small parties can work only t restricted areas between the tides. Generally it is apparent there is more mining activity at this juncture than has been the ease for some time, and the ultimate results should be to the general advantage of the - district.
