OVERSEER’S MONTHLY REPORT.
Sir, —I have the honour to .report upon the progress of works during the tile month of May.
NORTHERN RIDING
MAINTENANCE
Unemployed labour was engaged in clearing, cleaning watertables and general repairs to Kum-ara Road, clearing and repairing portions of Kapitea Track, Loop-lino, and Duffer’s Roads, clearing and widening portions of the Main Highways, clearing and. cleaning Stafford Cemetery, clearing drains One Mile Road, constructing 12 inch diameter pipe drain with inlet and outlet drain on Arahura Valley Road. Metalling portions of One Mile, Blue Spur-Araliura and short section of road to J. Muir’s holding, Arahura Valley; clearing and repairing Arahura River Track, and .clearing gorse and blackberry growth fro-m Blue Spur-Arahura and Arahura Valley Roads; widening a narrow point on Blue S'pur-Arahura Road at the boundary of the Northern and Central Ridings, and improving the approaches to a new pipe culvert at Greenlees Creek. The power grader was used for one day completing the grading of Arahura Valley Road, No. 2 and 3 lorric-j being used for the cartage of gravel for road repairs and the cartage of beach sand to improve the frontage to Arahura School.
CENTRAL RTDING
Maintenance work was. effected principally by unemployed labour who cleared and cleaned watertables on Hokitika-Hau Han, Hau Han, Blue Spur, Milltown and a short section of Sunny Bight Roads, clearing small slips and repairing open crossings on Dorothy Falls Road, assisted to fill g-avel for repairs to Hokitika-Hau Hau, Seddon’s Terrace, Adairs, South Hokitika, Cropps, and Camelback Roads, clearing and repairing, also constructing a drain 600 links in length on Hau Hau Road, widening an abrupt corner on South Hokitika Road, attending the power grader when grading South Hokitika, Adairs and Arthurs town Roads. The bridge foreman, H. Reynolds, assisted by unemployed labour removed and reconstructed a bridge on Adairs Road, placed traffic planking, renewed decking and repaired Fisherman Creek bridge, Adairs Road, and prepared traffic planking and renewed decking on Fisherman Creek bridge, South Hokitika Road. Two defective stringers, which will be removed, prevented traffic planking being placed in position as intended. Concerete pipe construction was continued at the yard, Kanieri.
SOUTHERN RIDING.
Unemployed labour was engaged filling gravel for Raiatapu Road repairs, continuing the filling at the bridge on Ruatapu Road Diversion and clearing portions of J. Searle's and G. Heveldt’s holdings. A concrete pipe culvert was constructed at the first crossing on Redmans Road, the first hill metalled and 400 links of water-tables cleaned. The resident Roadman at Harihari assisted by casual labour attended to repairs, to Petersen, Wanganui" Flat and concrete pipe culvert construetion, and approaches on Robertson Road. A portion of old south road from Butler’s corner to Friend’s and a section of Wataroa Flat Road past the Factory was graded with the Austin grader drawn by No. 1 lorry and a load of pipes taken to Adamson and Butement Road, and 5 8 inch diameter pipes taken to Okarito Road, caisuaf labour onljy ’'being employed. Unemployed labour was engaged in clearing Okarito Domain.
REPORT RE SECONDARY HIGHWAYS.
I have the honour to report upon the progress of work on the Secondary Highways during the month of May.
LOWER KOKATAHT, McARTHUR ROAD.
Motor worn boles and depressions were repaired with fine gravel from, dumps by permanent labour from Kanieri to Graham’s corner, a distance of 7 miles and bv unemployed labour a further distance of 3 miles, absorbing 28 cubic yards and 20 cubic yards of gravel respectively. The power grader wa« used in re-surfaceing the road with displaced gravel over a distance of ten miles. Unemployed labour was engaged in filling No. 2 and 3 lorries which carted out 98 cubic yards of river bench gravel, same being placed on the road and a quantity dumped over a distance of one and three quarter miles from Kanieri to Taminclli Creek bridge. One 36 inch diameter pipe, 3 feet in length was placed at the inlet end of a 36 inch pipe culvert immediately below Taminelli Road where widening was affected the pro vion month. A section of road drain was cleared of blackberry and other growth for, 700 links above Klines drain. Unemployed labour was also '■ngaged in cleaning growth from the timbers of Kokatahi Bridge and tarring the main tension rods, bolts, washers, and other ironwork in the structure. UPPER KOKATAHI ROAD
A few motor worn boles were repaired between Graham’s corner and Township Road using 5 cubic yards of gravel.
LAKE KANIERI ROAI).
Unemployed labour was engaged in repairing ruts and depressions from Left Hand Branch Bridge towards the Lake, a distance of four miles, also cleaningwatertables for 500 links in length and painting the handrail on the bridge crossing the line of race near Coal Creek Bridge; one small slip removed from table in cutting beyond Cravfish Creek Bridge.
DETOUR ROAD
Detour Road was graded with the Austin grader from Gunn’s corner to Butler’s, and motor worn holes repaired for 60 chains in length using 22 cubic yards of gravel; in addition 112 J cubic yards of gravel wore carted nut and (lumped at intervals along the roadside for future repairs.
