COAL DISPUTE
CONFERENCE RESUMED TO-DAY
OWNERS MAKE A DEMAND

AUCKLAND, May 24
The conference of coal owners and miners of the northern district* convened to negotiate the new, working agreement resumed to-day.
When it first met on May 6th, the owners refused to begin del-berations until the miners at Hikurangi returned to work. The Hikurangi men resumed work on May 16th, but', since then,' have struck again, demanding that the notices of dismissal served on 55 men be withdrawn. When the l conference met this morning the owners intimated that they would not proceed with the discussion of a new agreement until the unions agreed that the manager of a mine shall have the right to shorten hands at any time at his own discretion. The union representatives retired to consider this intimation.
At Inncli time it was learned that che men had reached no decision on tlie owners’ conditions, hut had framed proposals for submission to the owners this afternoon. These proposals the men believed to he acceptable.
