AMMON RA-’-S- CHANCES
AUCKLAND, May 23,
Mr H. A. Wolfe, the Australian journalist, who reported on the Agua Ca’.iente Handicap, had something to s:y regarding methods adopted over thereon his return via Auckland.
Talking generally* of racing in America, Mr Wolf® said that the races wei’o run at top from start to finish. The riders there were licit the patient kind "known in Australia and New Zealand, and the method was t", bring out the whip immediately the horses left the Barrier. “It whs! jnot unusual to find .horses gali'qplng’ j the first two furlongs in 22 lsaid Mr Wolfe, "and the first six furlongs in ilmin lOsec., but after that they na'turnlly slowed up, and they would take about 55 seconds to cover the.’ last half-mile.
“Elliott adopted the Australian) method. He would drop in behind, the leaders and often be racing along at the itail of the field in the early"part, but over the last couple of .furlongs tlrhorses he rode would be galoping over the opposition. Elliott is bhuiifl, to do well in America, where there, are not many really first-class riders.”' ..
STARTING FROM -STALLS',
-iMr Yvbli'e mentioned that ‘af Agua 'On I rente on the, day that‘l’/i'ar Lap won there were 15 races,"’arid Phar 1. ip’-s race was the twelfth event', ‘The racing started at 10.30 in the : morning. He was not impressed by the”'method of starting each horse from a “stal 1 and considered that there was too nnicn pulling horses about to get them in readiness for the releasing of the barrier/ The barrier was' not breast high but whs above the horse, and frequently .horses dashed away and galloped 100 yards- before they, were pulled up.
‘ “I am certain Ammon Ra would, do well in America. The horse required to win race® there is otic that can niaintain a great speed up to a ini.'e And a quarter, and Amnion Ra . can do that. Only occasionnUy is a .two "miles’ race put on, and the nnuority for the best Dorses ar e at. -a mile) arid a quarter. These would suit Amnion Ra down to the ground.” %
