RUGBY FOOTBALL
THE WESTLAND SUB-UNION.
EXCELSIOR AND ROSS WIN.
The Westland Rugby • Sub-Union’s foompetitions were continued on Saturday, Rimu playing Excelsior .on the Square and Kiwis travelling to Boss.
RESULTS AT A GLANCE. Excelsior 41, Rimu 3. Ross 3, Kiwi 0. JUNIOR GRADE. 'School 9, Kokatahi 3. Rimu 8, Ross 3. EXCELSIOR V. RIMU.
There was only a moderate attendance at the Square whe'n the teams took the field, Excelsior having only fourteen men at the -start. From the outset there appeared no doubt as tothe ultimate issue of the match, the Reds • securing three tries in quiek succession, by King, W. Hughes and L. Hughes, the latter converting each. At this stage, Boyd (Rimu), was replaced owing to injuries, while Steven--6011 filled the vacancy in the home side. Excelsior continued to add to their advantage and by the interval had run up 30 points, while Rimu had not- opened their score. The second half saw ExcelsioT add another 11 points while Agnew kicked a penalty for the visitors. Additional tries were scored for the winners by Schroder (4), King (2), and Stevenson, the later converting- one, and L. Hughes kicked a penalty. Rimu attacked from the outset, but Excelsior gradually worked upfield and, thereafter, till the end. of the , first ispell were continually in Ririiu territory. The first try came early, King getting over in the corner after two unsuccessful attempts. , Schroder was then to the fore in a spectacular run down the line, evading all taclders uritil he reached the line where he passed infield. The ball passed through two pairs of hands before W. Hughes received to dart through and score. Excelsior wer e putting, plenty of vim into the game. The Rimu forwards, led by Gro-woott, were holding .their own against their heavier opponents, bi:t the home hacks were always in the (ascendency, and, throwing the ball about freelly, were ■ oontinually on the offensive, faulty handling and solid defence preventing • further scores. Four more tries by Schroder in. succession placed the iB»u« beyond doubt aad- Rimu never locked dangerous during the remainder of-the spell. The second half was more even, and
Rimu weije playing more determinedly. They frequently penetrated the home defence, o’Con nor and Agnew being outstanding, and play become more interesting, and less one-sided, hut Excelsior continued to hold the upper hand nevertheless. • The • feature of the game was the lack of cohesion , among the ' Rimu baejes which nullified the value of their attack, and the manner in which the; Reds tossed the ball about. On thej whole it was an uninteresting contest'. Mr F. Freitas was referee.
ROSS V. KIWIS.
Tn a hard and evenly fought contest, Ross, playing on their own ground defeated Kiwi by three points to nil on Saturday ; the first half ending without score. The Ross forwards fully bore out their reputation and played a sterling game although they were little superior to the young hard working Kiwi pack. 'C. Wright and Sando were the nick of the home team, while West and A. Stopforth were outstanding for Kiwi. Both sets of backs were disappointing, faulty work preventing good combination, and thus minimising chances of scoring. Individually, however, they made amends, but the machine-work was absent, The game was interesting throughout, although containing nothing brilliant. During the second spell Mitchell scored for Ross, taking full advantage of a ; lip by the visitors, in accepting a kick intended for the line and shooting over. There was little to' pick and choose between the teams and an interesting return match is anticipated. Mr E. Heenan was referee.
SCHOOL V. KOKATAHI
School journeyed to Kokatahi on Saturday and proved victorious by 9 to 3. The gam e was an even one in the first spelil the score at half-time being 3 all. Tn the second half Kokatahi lost .the /services of A. Stephens who injured his knee. School had considerably the better of the second half and added six points. For Kokatahi L. Jone- scored on unconverted try, and for School Adamson and Richards, kicked penalty goals and Howat scored a try. Mr J. Bannister was referee.
RIMU V. ROSS
Playing at Rimu, the home team beat Ross in a junior match by 8 points to 3. For the winners Mclntosh scored a try. Mason converting, bud also kicking a penalty.
