(if) I’jovi s ion of wall hyloplate for use of infants. M< ’ The allocation for the maintenance of -school buildings .has been reduced from £12,000 to £B,OOO for the current year. In view of this, certain necessary work must be hj’.d over in the meantime. In the opinion of the chairman, Mr G. W. Armitage, this economy decision will'mean that a greatly increased sum will have to be spent in the future to bring the schools back to their normal state of repair. Mr Armitage 'said that he did not think that it was wise economy to let the buildings deteriorate. The decision to reduce the allocation woo’d result in hardship being imposed 'on some com mi Etes, but the board had to comply with the wish of the Education Department and reduce its expenditure. ' As long ago a c last September the board reorganised its building and architectural staff, said Mr Armjtag? The result was that there had been effected an annual saving of £2150. This action had been taken without any request from the Department and was entirely voluntary on the part of the hoard.
Canterbury is the second largest education district ill tile Dominion, having over 400 schools in its area, which embraces the whole of Canterbury and Westland'. A number of the schools have been in need of urgent r pair.for some time, but in view of the cut of 33 1-3 per cent, made in the Department’s allocation many will have t,o go for a considerable period without attention.
