PRIMARY SCHOOLS GRANT.
REDUCED BY £2OOO,

WELLINGTON, May 18
An intimation was - received by the Wellington Education Board at . its meeting to-day that Cabinet have decided to reduce by £2UGQ, toe grant for the maintenance of the primary school buildings for the, whole Dominion. The money available will probably be allocated to the various districts on a basis of estimated requirements.
The Chairman of the Board, Mr T. Forsyth, said that he had forwarded an emphatic protest, not against the reduction, but against the basis of the allocation. The fair basis should be the number and the size of the buildings in each district and not the estimated requirements. The district which had looked after its buildings carefully was to be penalised. The districts which had not looked after their buildings would be scoring at the expense of the others. “If Wellington was not so modest,” remarked one member, “it could easily claim the whole amount available, so many are its school buildings needing repairs or remodelling.” The Chairman’s actiong, protesting was-approved.
