RUGBY FOOTBALL

REFEREES’ DECISION

CHRISTCHURCH,, May 17

At a meeting of the Canterbury Rugby 'Referees’ Association, Mr , 8. 'Hollander presiding, a discussion took place over the scoring of a try. Tirchairman said that there was the cast-* of a player diving over tile- line with the ball .under his arm and .grounding it without actually placing his hand oit. A like incident occurred last Saturday, when a player had attempted to score a try by putting his ■ foot on the ball'. This action proved that there was confusion in the minds' of some players. Mr A. Thompson remarked th",' trouble occasionally occurred when two players went across the line, both ol them' ground fug the ball together. I such a case the defender had as much right to the ball as the attacker, so that the should be a scrum five, yards out.

The chairman “aid that'the quest oi was one for the referee to decide. II he considered that both the attache’ and defender had held the ball in th in-goal area, a scrum five yards oir must be given. In all other cases a try or a force-down must be. given. It was decided that, if a player. after the ball had been put into th' scrum, disassociated himself from th' scrum, he could play the ball as SO off. as it was out of the scrum.
