ESCAPED PRISONER

HARBOURING ALLEGED

HUSBAND NOT YET CAUGHT.

AUCKLAND, May 16

A married woman named Vera Grace Hall, aged twenty-three years, a waitress, who is alleged by the police to have been harbouring an escaped priso liter, Frederick ’William Scliluter, was arrested at a bouse in Freeman’s Day on Saturday. She appeared before Mr F. K. S.M., in the Police Court, and was charged with failing i ; o comnly with the terms and conditions of her release on prolpi-tion.

Counsel for the defence said accused ball told him that *ho was the wife of Scliluter, whom she had married in March, 11)31. A short time before her marriage she had been placed on probation, one of the conditions being that file should not -associate with Scliluter. “I do not know if the police arrested this woman just to hold her,” said counsel “Certainly not,” interposed Detec-tive-Sergeant -Kelly. “We are- going ahead with the case.”

In granting a week’s adjournment on the application of the police, the Magistrate suggested that accused should he placed in the care of the female Probation Officer during the period of the remand.

“I am afraid I eimn't accent the responsibility,” .“aid Major Gordon. She added that accused had been on probation for false pretences as f««' back as 11)27.

Detective Moore, who arrested acoiLed. said the woman was the wife of Scliluter. They had been living together as recently a« last Saturday, when the woman wase taken into cos-to-day. Schlutcr. was still at large. Accused was remanded ori bail of £SO.
