Prom calculations made, Father O’Leary estimates that the earthquake took place less than three thousand miles to the northward of Sydney, most probably in the Sea of Celebes. An upheaval occurred on the flooi of the Indian Ocean less than four hundred miles from Perth, at 9.18 p.in. on Saturday. According to the Government astronomer, Mr Curlewis, the maximum shocks, which continued for fourteen minutes, caused the boom to swing repeatedly about seven inches.
