CORRESPONDENCE

RIMU JUBILEE,

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —In reply to subscriber’s letter of the 14th. inst, kindly allow us •space to state the facts.

“The Committee were identified ny wearing two badges. The official referred to, distributed a portion of the badges, and when his .supply r an out he gave one of his to a may pioneer. Later when asked for a badge, he replied he had none leftr. In the presence of witnesses, whose

names subscriber can have on application, the pioneer produced a £1 note and said ‘Here is £1 I brought for the Jubilee, but I must have n badge, or no donation.’ The official immediately gave him his remaining badge, and noted the donation in ms book in the presence of other Committeemen.

“The immigrant referred to was appointed assistant traffic inspector by the police and given the badges, as a mark of authority, which were not removed a§ stated by subscriber, until his official duties were ended.

“We understand 'that ‘native of the district’ tried to over-ride the assistant inspector, while doing his duty, and when lie met with a sharp rebuff, he let loose a flow of choice language which was no credit to a man holding a responsible public position.’’
