MINERS’ COUNCIL REFUSAL, ,

TO ACCEPT COAL OWNERS’

The following telegram has been sent on behalf of the West Coast District Miners,' in reply to the Coal Own. ers’ Association:—"Mr T. O. lAshop, Secretary, Gcal Owners, Wellington; Canpanies’ terms rejected. Miners desire withdrawal of terms, and arranging of a conference with the owners’ representatives to discuss a new district agreement at the earliest date. (Signed) W. Purdy, A. McLagan,”

The Miners’ Council resolved to recommend to all members at stop work meetings to be held on Monday, May 16th, that the ternis be rejected, and that an attempt be made to have the terms withdrawn, and have a District Agreement. “Tlie meeting also drew up detailed proposals, calculated to meet the situation that will arise .in the event of the coal companies maintaining their present dictatorial attitude. It was recognised that unity of purpose among the miners was essential at this time, not only on the West Coast, but also in other districts. At a mooting of the Qikuraugi Miners’ Union yesterday morning, after lengthy deliberation, it was decided that the inen should resume work, commencing at midnight Sunday. ,

In the meantime, the Unionist delegates will attend the Auckland Conference to resume the negotiations.

At the same time the case of the men dismissed will be placed before the conference;
