SATURDAY’S COMPETITIONS

SENIORS Kiwi 14, Rivals 3. Ross 11, Rimu 8

JUNIORS. Kiwi 27, Rimu 10. School 11, Ekcelsiors 0.

KIWI V. RIVALS

This game on Oass Square opened in sensational manner. From the kick off, the 'ball went to Kiwi line -and there the latter were penalised, George kicking ,a neat goal within two minutes of the .start of play. As it happened, however, this was the only score- to the. credit of .'Rivals for the game. Half , way through, the spell Hamilton kicke;l a inicely judged penalty for Kiwi. In the opening: stages of the second haif, KYwi,. (went, ■?. way .* with a rush and after several had handled, Walker fini hed a nice dash to score a try near the corner. A quarter of an hour later Sumner got over after a nice dash, and Walker converted. A further try came a little later, Pitcairn -scoring after a nice dash, but this was not improved, and the game ended in a win 'for Kiwi by 14 points (3 tries one converted and. a penalty goal) -to 3 points '(a penalty goal). The game was fairly interesting at times, ■ but there was too much individual stunting throughout and the Rivals’ captain was one of the worst offenders, the outside backs being starved throughout the game. The game went up and down the ' field very rapidly at times, while both side had numerous chances of adding to their score sheet. In some irstances bad handling at a critical-mjuncture cost tries, while 'in others. th c >' -failure topass proved' equally costly:" Tile scrum never worked wel! all through, and though-• Rivals le d a substantial weigh: advantage, they were kept going hard by their more active, if lighter opponents. There was very poor line out phy only on very occas’-o.is was the ball taken cleanly. The tackling generally was good, a flying tackle by Hamilton, when Rivals got a passing run on preventing Williams from scoring. On the play the Kiwi team we.l deserved their win, but the margin exceeded their actual superiority. Mi A. Cutbush was referee. and kept the game well under control.
