MEETING OF THE COUNCIL
BUSINESS AND REPORTS
The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening when there were present the Mayor (Mr (I. A. Perry) and Councillors T. W. Dull - , A. 11. El cock, E. W. FJeenaii, E. Toil hohnaim, A. C. Armstrong, J). P. Stuart and J. King. An apo ogy was received I roll) Civ. I). .J. Evans, and U. Heinz, a moUoii of .sympathy being passed with the latter in his illness.
Inward, correspondence was receive! and dealt .with as follows: From Wcsiliind Rugby Sub-Union making (a) Application for sole right to " c C ‘ss .Square on King’s BTfhday.
3rd June, and to charge admission fee for football tournament, the Council to receive 10 per cent, of the nett admission fees. Subject to same arrangements as usual, (b) Asking that the grass on football field be mowed as short as possible.—Receive!.].
The Wliakntauo Borough Council wrote regarding the Nat’onal Expenditure Adjustment Bid and asking Council to support representations to the Government to provide tor a compulsory reduction of 20 per cunt, by the banks of the interest rate upon advances.—Received.
Newman’s Motors Ltd. made application for permission to "remove Shell kerbside petrol pump from their frontage ill We'd Street fo Uleir Ironings' ill Sewell Street.—Granted. (J, ‘Hocksford and seven other pet’t Filers asked that the east side of Fitzherbert Street between Hampden Street’ and Stafford Street be kerbed and channelled to permit a more rapid escape for surface, water.—lt was decided that the matter be referred to the public works committee tor a. report.
Mr H. N r . Cage,made app ieatimi to occupy road reserve at the north end of Gibson's Quay.—Council had no objection to occupation a- at present. Mr J. F. Busbey, Christchurch, wrote enclosing a copy of the Ross ‘‘Guardian’’ dated 27tli May, 1871, in case it may be of interest :o local residents.— Decided that it be presented to the Public Library.
The Commissioner of Transport, Wellington, wrote asking the Council to assist in enforcing the conditions 'n respect of licenses under that Act, and pointing out that, where prosecutions are justified, and local authorities agreeable, officers undertake any proceedings approved by the Department, the Conn, ci! is entitled to 95 per cent, oi the tines imposed.—lt was decided that the Borough Inspector be appointed. Mr A. S. King, Brittan Street, wrote a-king for road access and drainage in Park St.—Received.
The secretary of the Westland Hospital Board forwarded a copy of receipts and expenditure for,, the year ended 31st March, 1932, and also the proposed estimates for the coining year. — Received,
The Inspector of Health, Oreyinotitli, forwarded the monthly inspection reports from November, 1931 to February, 1932,—Received, The Health Inspector, Greymouth, notified one case of infectious disease, and indicated that action would be taken by the owner of property to ensure better drainage.—Received.
The Chairman, No. 12 District Highways Council, Oreymouth, intimated that the Alain (Highways Board was agreeable to its own traffic insepeto 1 ’ supervising licensed transport services within their respective territories to ensure that the terms ot the licenses were being observed, but -the Board had no objection to group traffic inspectors undertaking the additional duties. — (Received.
The Sanitary Inspector, Greymouth, wrote re offal boiling works. Three Male.—lt was reported that the I Clerk had taken suitable action to mitigate the nuisance complained of. — [Received.
The N.Z. .Santitary Inspectors’ Association, Hastings, wrote in regard to exercising control over places where the milk sold bv ve"dors was produced. The District- Engineer, Public Works Department, Greymouth, intimated that the rate of subsidy was reduced as follows from the 16th May, 1932; Wages over £225 per annum, a 10 per cent, reduction ; £225 and under, 5 per cent, reduction. A , sub-committee- comprising Councillor Evans and Heenan, and the Town Clerk (Air H. G. F. Coles) were apointed to consider the classification of roads.
Afr W. E. Gaylor was appointed a,n inspector under the Motor Lorry Regulations. The financial statement showed tnat receipts totalled £540 13s 5d and payments. £675 17s lOd, there being a debit balance of £721 11s lid. Accounts totalling £674 7s 10d. including unemployment wages £262 15s Bd, were passed for payment.
Stock slaughtered at. the Alunicipal Abattoirs during the last period was as follows: Sheep 293, lambs 129,
bullocks 51, heifers 17, cows 10, pigs 9. Fees totalled £7O 10s as against£67 last year.
.Foreman’s Report. Tile staff has been employed the best part of the month in repairing footpaths with asphalt-, and tar sealing, the following paths being done: Weld iSt. from Revell St. to Sewell St. was repaired and tar sea ed, Tailored St. on both sides between Weld St. and Hamilton St-, was levelled, repaired with asphalt and tar sealed, Ssewell St. on tli(> west side, between AVeltl and Hamilton SL. was also done, and worn holes in WeLl St. repaired. A slip in Livingstone St. drain was clou tied out and a crossing on Hampden St. footpath repaired. The water occupied more time this month o'h'ing to the Kanieri Electric Po-wer Co. having our supply cut- off from tile Forks. The (.Dmpnny carrying out offensive repairs had the water off over a- week, requiring more attention to the Lake line, and replacing the pipes back at the penstock which was renewed. Hie supply is now normal. Leaks were repaired in various parts of the town and a valve on the corner of Fitzherbort and Hampden St. repacked.
Unemployed Relief. The unemployed were engaged on the Botanical Garden reserve, Cricket reserve, Aerodrome, and Cass Square and Mean drew Square, also forming a- footpath in Park St. between Davie and Jollie Sts. The fencing of the Botanical reserve lias been completed with five hark wires, and is How having the rushon nml gorse grubbed out, and the drains cleaned and deepened; the fence on the road side of the Cricket reserve is being renewed with three wires, the part being leased to T Stop forth, while that part on the nor tli side leased to T. Staines is being cleared of gorse and blackberries. Three scythe men have been engaged cutting growth on the sides of the two at the abattoirs, and two at the swimming baths, library, and shed, repairing.
