THE NEW SCHEME
IS IT FOR THE CENTRES ONLY?

DANNEVIRKE, May 13.
When a deputation, from the Unemployment Relief Committee was waiting on the Dannevirke Hospital Board cu-uay, a member or * the ' deputation said that the New Government relief scheme would not apply in the countrydistricts.
Tiie Mayor, Mr M. Smith, headed the deputation. He remarked, “That’s news to me.”
it was stated that the new scheme ivould only apply to the! cities.
The Mayor; f it does.”
‘ •There! will be .trouble
Mr A. H. Hansen; “It has to he remembered that peojde can be just • as hard up and hungry in the country as those in the cities.”
The Mayor later remarked that if the .Minister of Employment said that they in Dannevirke or in other country centres were not going to receive any benefit from the new scheme then they would want to know why, and pretty quickly, tdo. ..The people jin tins district had to pay their shilling in the pound, and they would expect to receive the benfits of the new scheme,
Mr H, Fredrickson: “You will find the country up in arms if it is only applied to the centres.”
NO EVIDENCE OF PICKETING.
POSITION IN WELLINGTON,
WELLINGTON, May 13,
In spite of the strike and of rain, about 543 relief workers were busy today on'various jobs in the city. Unden normal conditions some 900 men (Would have been at work, as most of the married men had already completed their allocations for the week. The rain is. estimated to have . reduced the attendance by thirty frer cent. There was no evidence of picketing.
Th Hospital Board has agreed to give relief for one week only to the wives and .children of the inen tai strike. ‘ ->!' : .i-;. '

At a meeting of the Citizens’ Relief Committee this morning to consider the question of relief as it is affected by the present strike of the relief- 1 workers) “thW ftfltottiifg'* * Ib-goliYfion was passed: “That relief be granted for a period of one week to the wives and the children oh)y of the mqn who are on strike.
Supplementing this information, the Chairman of the Hospital Board said: ’’After the usual inquiries have been made regarding the .wages earned, the amount, of relief afforded will be based on the usual scale, except that thb men on strike will not be provided for.” ' •* ’
