The was in increase of two cases of infectious and other notifiable diseases in the Canterbury and West Coast health districts for the weekended neon on Monday as compared with the previous week. The total was ten, as follows: —Canterbury: Scarlet- fever, 2 ; diphtheria, 1; tuberculosis, 3; lethargic encephalitis, 1. Went Coast: Scarlet fever, 1 ; tuberculosis, 2.
While trawling for fish, Mr Frank Gracia, of Akaroa, caught a silver tuna, whose habitat, is off the coasts of Florida. The fish is 3ft 2in -in length, very fat and solid, with silver, iridescent skin, and weighing 311 b. Tt lias been sent to the Christchurch Museum. This is said to be the third of its species caught in New Zealand waters.
The Chrysanthemum Show was opened in the Soldiers’ Hall this afternoon. It is a very fine one, the disr play of blooms being of an outstanding nature. All the morning the Committee were busy receiving exhibits, and then' the judging took place. There was a large attendance in the afternoon. Tiie show will lie open again this evening from 7 o’clock.

Good progress has been made by the contractors with the construction of the Grey Electric Power Board’s dam in the Arnold River at Kaimata, and the river has now been diverted through “sluice holes” in the dam wall, preparatory to excavating the bottom, nod concreting the final gap in the dam, It should not bo many weeks before the work is completed and the water turned on to the power station, through the tunnel. The recent rainfall which has brought up the river beyond its effect is causing a temporary delay, will not mean any set back in the way of structural damage.
