At the Government House Wellington on /Friday afternoon, lias Excellency the Governor-General, Lord B-ledisloe, presented publicly to Constables A. A. H. Baker and W. SHammond, of Wellington, the King’n Police 'Medal which his Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to confer on these members of the Now Zealand Police Force in recognition of conspicuous bravery di.splayed by them in their' 'endeavours to rescue membeds of the, crew of the steamer Pi ogress, which was wrecked at Ohiro Tlav, Wellington, on May 1 last year. Hie presentation took place in the presence of the Commissioner of Police (Air W. G. Wolilmaim) and about fifty members of all ranks of the Police Force, whom his Excellency addressed.
Among the numberless stories of adventure that have been heard concerning man’s search for gold, there arc records of the precious metal having been discovered in some strange places, and it is this element of uncertainty that has led many a prospector on his licklp quest. But when a sportman in the Lnwerence district last week commenced to clean a pukeko which he had shot his thoughts were probably far from gold and everything connected with it (states the “Otago Daily Times”!. His attention was arrested, however, by something shining among the con tents! d.f> tln> bird’s gixzard, and. on closin’ examination, this proved to he gold. Two pieces were found, each about the si/.o of a large pin-head, and they* were polished smooth as the result of the grinding process to which that had been subjected.
