SHANGHAI, May 9.

Conditions in 1 Manchuria are going , from bad to worse. The Japanese are ‘ engaged in endless guerilla warfare! aml oecii'sio’niil major engagements against the Maiichukiis forces, which arc l ' instituting a reign, of terror in many parts, burning villages and destroying railways, tracks and stations, and terrorising the countryside. The Japanese to-day ordered a general attack on the Chinese brigade, and occupied the walled city c.f Faneheiig, allowing the Chinese burning of Tun,;lio city, compelling the Japanese garrison to take refuge, in transports on the river to escape the fire.

Meanwhile, the League Commission is . unable to make much headway in its investigation of the Manchurian situation, owing to the lighting in the majority of the districts,

The Japanese} withdrawal is proceeding according to the schedule laid down in the peace treaty. Nanzinng, Liulio,. and Rating, three of the. most important towns the Japanese occupied in the area' are now evacuated, and the general withdrawal is proceeding apace.

The anti-Munchukuo troops obtaining a‘success against the Japanese reached a point near Harbin, caused a panic among the Chinese sections of the city. The Japanese are retiring, pending the arrival of reinforcements from the army evacuating Shanghai.
