(British Official Wireless.)
RUGBY, filay 6
The United States Ambassador, Mr Andrew Mel.on, was welcomed to tlie city at a Mansion House luncheon, presided over by the Lord Mayor. ' Replying to the toast of his health, Mr Mellon referred to the dire predictions he had heard expressed during the crisis in England la-st autumn. Knowing tlie steadiness, courage unci real capacity of the-' British people, lie said he never for a moment doubted they would rise to the occasion and surmount the difficulties as they always did in a great emergency. Similarly liis: faith in America was fully justified,
Congress was seeking means to level' over one billion dollars of new taxes, and there, was a very clem - uiidersta-nd-itig of what should and must be done by the- party leaders and by the President, who had 'shown leadership of the highest order in submitting a programme of legislation designed to strengthen the credit structure and restore- confidence.
