FAULT FOUND
QUEENSLAND HARDWOODS.
U.S. IMPORTERS COMPLAIN.
(United Press Association.— By Electric
Telegraph.—Copyright.)
NEW YORK, May b.
The Australian authorities have been compelled to investigate & series of complaints over a period of more than a year by several of the largest importers of hardwoods here to the effect that shipments of Queensland walnut, bearing certificates of approval from the Queensland F'orestry Service, have, been seriously defective, and not as warranted. The situation cam© to a head with a shipment in April of 49 logs which were certified fresh cut and as- reasonably free from pin worms, double heart and flange; but they allegedly' were found not to have been fresh cut, were, irregular shaped with defective hearts, and were from ten to a hundred per cent. loss. (Many large furniture factories, which had desired veneers from these it others, cancelled their orders, and it is understood that the Federal Australian authorities are concerned, over the future of the hardwood trade,,, which has recently shewn .interesting possibilities of development with America.
It i,s learned- that one. of., the. large hardwood importers- wrote.“lf . y<?J> continue to ship poor grade logs to the United States at high prices, we are afraid it will spoil the market and prevent further business.” It is understood, moreover, that shippers in Australia declare they are unable .to make allowances for defective shipr meats, because they bore the Queens-, land Forestry Service certificates.
