COUNTY COUNCIL
FINANCE MEETING. The Finance Committee of the Westlaid County Council met at the County Office last evening. There were present. Mr W. Searle (Chairman of Committee), Messrs W. Jeffries, M. Houston, J A. Murdoch, and M. Keenan (County Chairman). Apology was made lor the absence of Mr M. Wells. The accounts for the month oi April were submitted and approved, to the amount of £ll3l/10/6. (The, Overseer’s report on Secondary Highways and district roads were received.
Correspondence. The meeting sanctioned a vote of £ls for repairs to Mt. Greenland track. Regarding [repairs to \YOolhou.se Road, Totem, the meeting accepted an offer from G. P. Rea to supply gravel at 2/- per yard. It was agreed to take 175 cubic yards.
An application was considered from Brown and Nilsson to lay a traimva.v for the haulage of sawn timber on Evan’s Road; same was approved subject to the conditions outlined being agreed to, the County Solicitor to prepare an agreement on the lines indicated. 'Jhe Overseer submitted a report on protection work at Big Wanganui Ferry reserve, where Mr C. Herlihy, the Lo.iant iiau earned out work to um
value of £BO or £9O. A. considerable length of protection had been* done with trees and logs, hauled by a tractor, and three horses. The wire nets supplied by .the Council would be used to good advantage where the river was lower. It was agreed to supply a further coil of wire, and satisfaction was expressed at the amount of valuable work done
It was resolved to send a copy of the Overseer’s report on the flooding of Purcell Road, Matainui, to Cr. Donovan to look further into the matter. An estimate for fencing a portion of Mahinapua Road was laid oil the table and referred to the Council. The I'ollowing list of work for application for Government grants was approved:—

SECONDARY 'HIGHWAYS REPORT. The Overseer reports as folio us : Kanieri 'Lake Road : N 0 casual labour was engaged during the month, but unemployed labour was engaged in repairing motor worn holes over a distance ot one mile absorbing 11 cubic yards ot gravel ; also in the. removal ot a. small slip and one wind blown tree trom tile road on Boucher's Hill. A short section of road was cleared on the eastern side of principally s;one and gravel for two feet in height, four feet in width, and 100 'links in length, oh the western side of Coal Creek Bridge, also a .short section widened near the Power House for 75 links in length. A short .section of watertables was cleared and cleaned and the banks cleared of growth for 400 links near Lake Kanieri ; al-o one slip removed from the watertabje on the first hill west of Lake Kanieri.
Upper Ivokatahi Road ; Motor worn holes were repaired with fine gravel over a distance of 60 chains, 8 cubic yards of gravel being used for the purpose. Unemployed labour was engaged i)n d'earing growth from the lOi.'iside for 500 links in length. Lower Kokatahi-McArthur Road : Motor worn holes were repaired with gravel over a distance of 7 miles, us-
ing 59 cubic yards of gravel, and a short section west of Morris Hill wijf. surfaced with 5i cubic yards ol gravel. Unemployed labour was engaged in clearing blackberry and other growth from the roadside and drains in .sections, totalling 800 links ; also in removing a fence from the road side for 800 lin':: in length, and widened for 600 links in length, (-even feet in width, and two feet in height, and lor 100 links, sx feet .in widtli and nine inches in height, the County lorries carting the material which was filled by-unemployed labour, 225 cubic yards of screenings being used for tile purpose. Unemployed was usefully engaged in clearing the growth off the truss timbers of Kokatnhi Bridge and furring some of tintension rod's, plates and holt heaths of small bolts.
Detour Road : Large stones and other debris were removed from the road surface after grading, and motor worn holes repaired over a short distance with nine cubic yards of gravel.

The Overseer reports as follows :
i CENTRAL RIDING
Unemployed labour was engaged with the grader on .Station Road, and rilling one of the COunty lorries for Station Road, Hokitika Gorge, Koitcrangi Road, Hokitijka-Hau Hau, and Blue Spur Road« repairs. NORTHERN RIDING. All work was performed by unemployed labour comprising cleaning drains on Kuinara Junction Road, repairing and cleaning, rough stoney sections of Kumara Junction-Chesterfield Road, draining H. Hunter’s land at Kuinara Junction, clearing, repairing and re-, ducing, sides on Kumara Road, renewing decking and joiste on Kapitea Bridge, clearing Loopline and Kapitea Tracks,. assisting Public Works at road works; Stafford, clearing Stafford ceme T tery, removing slip from Awatuua Road, filling bole' on Gillams Gully Road, cleaning up tfe- Maori cemetery at Arahura, cleaning drain oil Main Highway' at Arahiif&jr/cleaning drains .One Mile Road, repairing Arahura River Track, . clearing and repairing Arahura Valley Road, clearing drains Humphreys Road, widening cutting and repairing Blue Spur Arahura Road, past German Road, constructing a double course pipe culvert and filling at an open crossing near GreevUes, and continuing the • widening of the ihigh point on Blue Spur-Arahura Road on the boundary of the Central and Northern Ridings. Also grading One Mile and a portion of Arahura Valley Road as far as Two Mile Road.
SOUTHERN RIDING. The resident roadman at Harihari ivas employed repairing Wanganui fiat,' Petersen Road and other roads requiring attention in the inter-Wanganui district.
