The Guardian And Evening Star, with which is incorporated the West Coast Times MONDAY, MAY 2, 1932. MINING ACTIVITIES.
It is pleasing to learn from day to day that there are so many actively engaged in prospecting operations up and down the district. Quite a number cf parties have', been in the back country seeking ior reefs or other deposits, and it seems a pity tnat there is not any record of these doings, so that in the future there will not be any overlapping in further prospecting. The local Association has not been heard of of late, and probably this is a branch of its work which could be taken up and useful records kept. Prospecting parties could be asked to supply reports 'on the country traversed, and the results obtained. 'Hits information would be a guide for other local efforts as the circumstances warranted. If this information were collected and the district plan plotted with the scene of operations, there would he a valuable record for future guidance, If the Minister of Mines is to be met with practical suggestions when he comes here shortly, information on the lines indicated would be helpful in placing concrete proposals to the Minister for help in opening up or otherwise providing access to lively localities, Requests for assistance should be based on; results showing practical possibilities and if fortified in that way, tlfere would lie every reason to expect assistance, The local body concerned in returns from goldfields might also be induced to support prospecting on a sound basis, by setting aside a percentage of the goldfields revenue. This would be a reasonable request where a genuine prospecting effort was in sight. It appears if there is to be a sustained revival of mining activities, concerted action is required, and help from all available sources is desired. In a couple of days time the Rimu goldfield jubilee will be in progress. The success of that field and of others before it, warrant further effort being made to test country likely to support another Rimu, an event which did much to 'stimulate the district fifty years ago, when the town and district were in a worse period of depression than that experienced here now.
