The Westland Sub-Union senior competitions were commenced on Saturday afternoon under weather condl- - and a dry ground. On (Ja»s Square the Excelsiors and Rivals met the former winning by 8 points (a, goal from a try and a penalty goal) to 3 points (a try). The game was fairly even, both sides having nuiner■our promising chances to score .hut were thrown away by faulty handling or wild passing at a critical stage. All the scoring was done in the first half, lit was 3.20 pan. when the game was ist.ui'ted, uaul then neither side had full Deums, two men on each side joining up after play had started. Rivals were firs; to score, a nice passing rush enabling W illiams to'get over in a good posit.on, but Ptahlert’s effort to convert was a poor one and a couple of shots from free kicks were also futile. T..eu Excelsiors took a hand in attack and from near the line ait the 25 Hag Hughes kicked a line goal. -Before half time a passing run saw Schroder go over near the corner and lie ran round to ground near the posts, Hughes again converting.
.the second Vail was much slower though the play went up and down, the Rivals having several good chances to score, but play ended without any addition, thq winners luv.iig held a small advantage on the play. Tire new scrum formation was played, but the forwards did not settle down too well and chore was a decided ragged ness in the- play, which want of condition did not, improve, most of the players showing the usual euny season want of form. Air D. Breeze was referee.
KIWI DEFEATS RIMU 6—3. By six points to three Kiwi defeat'd Rimu on the latter’s ground on Saturday, in a bright, open match, which was full of incident. The Kiwi backs showed a good understanding and the ball travelled from scrum to wing in many nice movements each man handling and passing well. They were fast and sure, and always to be reckoned with. Morgan, who played an outstanding game, and Fleming scored tries for the winners. Atkinson at half, was also prominent, and sent his backs away well time after time.
The Rimu backs, were inclined to be weak in the five-eighths, but individually, they were good and oit n pierced the opposition to open up the game. Bovd. at half, was the pick, being always in the scene. The Riiuiu forwards secured from the majority of the scrums, and Boyd sent the ball away 6n every possible oeeasii n, but faulty passing and handling lost them many opportunities. Tlie forwards played a solid game, Kiwi, packing a 3—3 —2, having ~ slight advantage in weight. For Rimu, Groweott, Inglis.and Lewis werp always to the fore while Walker, West, Sumner and Cook were the pick of the hard-working Kiwi vanguard. Riinn’s try was scored by Hvndinan.
REFEREEING. The season is yet young, and already there have been some interesting discussions on the side line. While not desiring to criticise any referee, attention was drawn to a decided erroneous decision on two occasions. In one instam,.;* a player was penalised for olfside wli.-n he handled a ball that had been passed back by an opponent in a passing rush. On more than one occasion the play was stopped for a knock-oil when the hall rebounded off the player, and on another occasion "In n a player in attempting to take a catch, all lowed it to drop to his feet hp was penalised for a knock on, when the ball did not go forward at all.
