AUCKLAND, April 29

A prisoner at Mouut Eden Gaol, Frederick William Scbluter, or Sluter, aged -42 years, escaped from custody shortly before- four o’cock this afternoon, itnd at a bite hour he was still at large. At the time of bis escape, Scitlutei*, who is u inee-iuuvlc by trade, was engaged in connecting telephone wires from the gaol w one of the warder’s houses in Clive, Rond, Mount Eden, at the rear of the gaol reservo. In order to accomplish this work, the prisoner was permitted to leave the gaol ground under the escort of a warder, and to enter the house in Clive Road. While completing the installation to the telephone in the house, Scbluter made a sudden dash past his guard, and out of the building. A 1 though the warder immediately started in pursuit, he was unable to overtake the prisoner, who ran across the reserve and into some scrub near Mountain Road, where be disappeared from sight. The Gaol authorities were informed by telephone of the es«ii >*, and a party of warders at once instituted a. seareli, combing a wide area of the scrub-covered ground adjoining the gaol property. A short time later a detective and constable from lie Central Police Station arrived on the scene, and joined in the search, but thev discovered no trace of the missing' man. who is thought to have been aided by friends.
