In the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, the Leader of the Opposition moved an adjournment t« Seunble the discussion on the new unemployment relief scale. Labour members expressed the ■opinion that re'ief workers world be worse off under the new scheme than formerly., Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates said that, the organisation was being completely overhauled, and the Government would see that, where work could not be provided, the people would, at least, be fed. He had confidence that the new scheme would be superior to any previous contribution to the unemployment problem. The debate (lapsed with the adjournment of the House at 5.39 p.m.
In the evening, the l Customs resolution?, in terms of the Canadian-New Zealand trade agreement were adopted. The trade agreement of New Zealand w.ith Canada Ratification Bill was introduced and read the first time.
Amendments to the National Expenditure Adjustment Bill were affio introduced |by Governor-General's message, and referred to the committee on the Bill.
The Premier, Mr Forties, said that the Amendments were designed to meet the anomalies in regard to the question of reduction in rent and interest. They wore mosVy technical, and tin cl not involve a departure from the general principle. The Local Elections and Polls Amendment Bill was introduced by Governor-General’s message and was accorded urgency.
Moving the second reading, Hon. A. Hamilton (C-, Wallace), said that the BVI permitted ratepayers, who were not more than two years in arrears with rates, to nominate or be nominated, or to vote in connection with county elections. There was also provision for the postponement of the election in the Matakoa County. 1 his county was faced with financial difficulties, and it was con Adored inadvisable to ’hold ithe election this year. The Bill was put through all its stages and passed. The House rose at- midnight.
