According to the Berlin correspondent of “The Times,” the German Evangelical Church alleges inhuman persecution of its religious communities settled in the Volga Basin. It declares that 3UO pastors have been imprisoned and sent to labour camps. One pastor named Erbea died of ■spotted typhus, which his starved system could not resist. Another, imprisoned by the Ogpu, was forced no latand upright in a cell for seven days. When ho collapsed, exhausted, he was beaten and forced to stand again. The Ogpu hoped to extort a confession •concer'ning alleged anti-Soviet activities. This pastor was condemned to hard labour in the Siberian forests, where he was obliged to fell trees in conditions of unutterable 00ld 4 and fifth. Often lie lacked bread . The Church appeals for the immediate rescue of those persecuted.
