On the occasion of the Association Cup Final, long lines of supporters, wearing the rival colours—scarlet for Arsenal and magpie stripes for Newcastle United—-supplied ail informal guard of honour as the Royal car approached die stadium, amid rolling cheers. A storm of coloured caps was iflung in the air just prior to the entrance of Their .Majesties, who were ..ccompanied by the Duke and Duo'.a-ss <>f York, Princess Mary and Lord Harewood. The thousands of conflicting noises among the -enthusiastic crowd were stilled by the opening bars of “Abide With Me’’ from the united bands of the Welsh and Irish Guards. The spirit of the whole assemblage changed as the concourse devoutly joined in the hymn strains, which, rising to the sunlit sky, turned this modern Coliseum into a vast op n cathedral. Then -thunderous , loyalty t'l-otn many thousand throats greeted >hi* appearance of the Royal party. The King chatted with the captains and referees Lassies from Newcastle created a wild scene at the end of the am by trying to kiss the victois as the\ ran upstairs to shake hand with ta King and to receive their medals an to watch Nelson, the victorious captain, take the silver cup from th King’s hands. The Newcastle team’s youth vigour deserved their victory, though the game v-'a well contested. Both the Arse Halites and their spectators warm’.J disputed Newcastle’s first goal, alleging that the hall crossed the line before it was kicked. Nevertheless the bettci team won. The Arsenal team omitted Beasley and James (two cracks) and included Hulme, who played the game of his life, but without James, the team resembled a watch without its main-

spring. John scored tile first goal for Arsenal fifteen minutes after p'av began. Allen then equalised for Newcastle just before half time. He shot the winning goal 27 minutes after the resumption.

NOT A FAIR GOAL

NEWCASTLE’S FIRST SCORE

LONDON, AprV 24

While the press critics, the Arsenal players and the officials themselves are unanimous that the better team won the Cup final, there are similar unanimous opinions that Newcastle’s fil'd goal ought to have been disallowed. A news film 'clearly -shows that the ball went over the goal line before being centred. Neither the referee "or (he linesman was in a good position to see what happened at. the moment. Though the referee adheres to his decision, .which is final, it is sure to be discussed for months. It is described as being one of the biggest ol all the Cup final -sensations.
