ANZAC DAY
EMPIRE SERVICE LEAGUE. TRIBUTE PAID TO THE ANZACS. (United Press Association —uy Electrio Tek graph —Copyright.) (Received this day at 9.55 ft a.m) LONDON, April 25. Sir Granville R.yrio presided at the British Empire Service League’s Anzac Day luncheon. Those in attendance included Brigadier-General J. H. Cannan (New Zealand), and Lieut. Colonel EitzliiCirhert. Gem oral Binlwood, responding to the toast of those who served at. Gallipoli, said that the world had provided no better examples ol real democracies than Australia and New Zealand. They would never fight unless they believed the cause was righteous yet, their men gave their lives willingly at Anzac, knowing that they fought in a righteous cause. He did not desire to overlook anything of the bravery of the Twenty-ninth Division, but the Anzacs,fought with almost reckless bravery.
NEW ZEALANDERS OFFICIATE.
LONDON, April 25
Canon W. P. Lesley, formerly of New Zealand, preached the Anzac Day memorial service at St. Clement Danes, Latham, and Sir Thomas Millord road the lessons. Tile latter was suddenly overcomes by faintness during the reading, and had to allow the church warden to complete tin* lesson. Afterwards, Sir Thomas placed a wreath on the Cenotaph on behalf of the New Zealand forces, and Lady Wilford on behalf of the Victoria League in New Zealand
CEREMONY AT HONG KONG. HONG KONG, April 25. There was an impressive ceremony at the Cenotaph this morning, it being attended by local Australian and New Zealand residents. COMMUNIST SPEECH PREVENTED. CHRISTCHURCH, April 26. There were scenes of mild excitement in Victoria Square for a brief period yesterday, wjheii the self-acclaimed Communist, G. F. Riley, in an attempt to make a speech after the Anzac Day parade had passed, found himself prevented from mounting a. soap box bv the police. Finally, be was taken forcibly in hand by friends, and driver away in a taxi.
At one time a crowd of two thousand surged round, but nothing untoward occurred, though Bilev struggled hal'd t 0 escape the grip of friends, kicking! and protesting.
