With the transfer of Sub-Inspector Q. W. (Lopdell on promotion to Greymouth, the West Coast will gain the services of a police officer who is one of the recognised authorities on the licensing laws of New Zealand. Ever since he joined the Force in 1901 he has displayed an extraordinary interest in this section of the law, and on many occasions lie lias sprung a surprise by exploring fresh avenues in the sections of the Act.

The Greymouth Jockey Club has decided to hold a race meeting at Onioto on the King's Birthday .(June 3)- Although the programme has not been finally decided on, tihe stakes will be about £4OO for .seven events. There wi’l be two hack races, three open races, and two trots. It can scarcely be anticipated that there will be many visiting horses for this meeting, but it should be welcomed by all West Coast owners and trainers who have to keep their horses for many months until the next meetings would be held.

The Soldiers 1 Hall is a very gay and busy '.scene to-day, and has all the appearance of a bazaar—with admission free. There is a great array of goixls, and the six stalls are all crowded with a variety of supplies that will meet the demands of any household, ’file display is. unexpectecrly large and should command large patronage. The sale will continue throughout, the afternoon and in tno early evening, so that housewives have a special opportunity to secure bargains for the week-end. The lacuesr committee bus certainly done exceedingly well and deserves all credit for their fruitful work.

Two freak deer heads each a malformed 2i-pointer, were brought in to Christchurch last week for mounting, 'the Kakaia deer forest of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society contributed one, the trophy of an English tourist, who brought out several normal good heads, and the other was shot in the Lees Valley country. A-peculiarity shared by the heads is that each antl-v of each head is equipped with the “cup” at the top which is one of the hall marks of good heads such as the "royal ’ —prized among trophies—the cups of royals, according to tradition, must each hold a tumblerful of wine. There was heavy rain yesterday afternoon from the north, and then it swung round to the south west. There were continued heavy showers during the night and this morning, and the atmosphere was considerably cooler.

A slip occurred at about 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon on the Rewanui line, just alter the afternoon train hay passed on its way about a mile and a-hnlf above the Dunollie Railway station. The train bringing tile miners from their work bad to stop on the other side of the slip and the miners bad to walk home. The slip was cleared later in the evening and the train was able to return to Greymouth.

At the Magistrate’s Court, Westport, on Thursdavt Thomas Davies appeared before Mr W. Miss E. Comyns Thomas (of Christchurch), pupil of Miss Margaret Morris and Mrs Wordsworth, London, announces she is prepared to give lessons in modern ballroom, G*.*eek and cpeiatic dancing in Hokitika. The programme to be presented at the Princess Theatre (appearing on the front page) on Monday night will commend itself to all music lovers. It is well arranged with vocal and instrumental numbers as well as elocutionary items, and patrons should find the fare provided very enjoyable. The occasion is a benfit for the R.S.A. building fund, and thus assistance to the soldiers is worthy of veiy liberal patronage. The prices of admission are nominal and a full house will be very helpful to the local organisation which is de. rving of all public supnort.
