BETWEEN AUSTRALIA AND N.Z
EXPORTS ANI) IMPORTS DROP
(Australian Fress Association.)
(Received this day at 9.25 n.m) CANBERRA, April 22,
The serious decline in trade between Australia and New Zealand during the past five years is causing concern to the Commonwealth Government, snd investigation iis being made at an early date to disccft-rr means of improving the position. Whereas in 1925-26, Australia exported goods worth ’ £5,157,000 to New Zealand, the total value of exports in 1930-31 has fallen to £2,970,000.
A corresponding decline is evidenced in the imports from New Zealand. One factor in the loss of trade *y Australia is said to be New Zealand's increased grain imports from Canada. The appointment of an Australian Trade Commissioner to New Zealand is living strongly urged here, and it is officially stated that Australia is losing trade in the Southern Pacific Island*. due to the New Zealand trade development. It is regarded that a possible trade treaty with New Zealand will lie dismissed after the Ottawa Conference.
