WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE
REJECTED FOR THIRD TIME LONDON, April 18. A few weeks ago the French Senate for the third time, 1 .refused to agree to a provision granting the suffrage to women, although it had been passed by the Chamber of Deputies. Meetings of protest emphasised the fact that France, practically alone among European countries refused all political rights to women. A curious anomaly of French politics is that while the Left parties are the- champions of woman suffrage, the Senate, which is controlled by those parties, is strongly opposed to it, while the Chamber dominated by parties of the Right, Ims frequently approved it, One of the principal reasons given by Senators for their opposition to 'the measure i<a that women would be more susceptible than men to political influences exerted by the clergy.
