TEACHERS’ SALARY CUTS

CHRISTCHURCH, April 20.

Notice was received by the Canterbury Education Board from the Education Department that the graduaed wcale of cuts in teachers’ salaries and are to take effect- on April 1. The cuts are to be a.s fol-lows:—-5 per' cent, on salaries and allowances dpi..to £225 a year; 10 per cent up- to.. £720; 12) per cent, over £720. It is -provided that the curs ■shall not- operate so- as to bring the salary of a teacher below that of a teacher who haw been in receipt of a lower salary. The cuts are fixed on the scale piovided in the National Expenditure Adjustment Bill, which has not yet been passed by Parliament and if any alterations are .made before the Bill becomes law adjustments arc to be made accordingly. .

WELLINGTON, April 19

it is announced that arrangements have been made whereby all Imperial pensioners who receive reimbursement through London will be given tbe benefit of the exchange position, with a retrospective effect to January 1, 1930. In the past- these pensioners who are resident, in New Zealand have been deprived of the 10 per. cent. premium 011 exchange, which, they claim tliev are entitled to receive.

Arrears due for the period between January Ist., 1930, and December 31yt., 1931, are being assessed, and it it expected that all payments in this connection will be completed before the end of May. Tn future the full amount due (including exchange) will be. paid with every instalment
