THE UNEMPLOYED
LARGER OUTLAY
CONTEMPLATED BY BOARD. (By Telegraph. — Be. Brets A ssociation/ WELDING TON, April 18. The Unemployment Board, hitherto severely limited in its weekly allocations for relief work, having not more than £1)0,000 available for each period, is now .completing its plan© for effectively spending a much larger weekly sum after May Ist., when authority is given in the amending legislation to impose quadruple the former wage tax.
Aot only does the improved revenue enable a more permanent type- of work to be undertaken, hut it is t-.-i----pected that the board’s plans will include also a liberalisation of condition©, the most important being me abolition of the stand down ween.. While any improvement in the rates of pay, if any would be slight, it is certain that continuity of employment will be provided. “There is no chance of sustenance without work being paid in New Zealand,” said Mr J. G. Coates this afternoon. “The general public does not seem to realise that it would take about £5,900,000 to make that provision, apart- from the demoralising and psychological effect.” Mr Coates added that the demands nyide by the Auckland unemployed were unreasonable, and could not be considered. However, at all times reasonable requests would he listened to.
