TO BE CELEBRATED

CENTENARY OF THE DYNAMO. LONDON. April 18. ' Commemorative ceremonies are to be held in London next month to celebrate tlie centenary of Samuel Alfred Varley, “father of the dynamo.” Born in England nearly a year after Faraday’s discovery of magnetic induction, Varley made in 1866 the first “self-exciting” dynamo electric machine,

The discovery of magnetic induction had not been carried far enough to permit its application to a practical machine, so the distinction of being the originator of the dynamo is generally accorded to Varley. At the great International Exhibition in 1885 his original machine, for which he received a gold medal, was on exhibition and generatng current, It was lent to the South Kensington Museum in 1887 and it lias remained there ever -since. Varley worked unremittingly on improvements and a later discovery of his enabled the dynamo to become efficient in operation under all tlie various conditions of commercial application.-
