Valedictory—There was a large audience in the Kanieri Hall to bul farewell to Bev. H. E. Nqwton. Mr w. P. McKay presided, and presented Mr Newton with a pair oi hair brushes, a pipe and pouch and a greenstone paper . cutter, lie also extended a welcome to Mr Newton § successor, Rev. Rice. During the evening items were given by Misses McKay, G. White Burns, A. Mulfi-oy, McFadyen, Mitchell, W. White and Messrs. R, Wells; Bnlfe, Coulson, Hutton, \ . McKay, W. Morris, and Heppell. Rev.’ Elliott Farowelled—A social evning for the purpose of saying good-bye to the Bev. W. J. Elliott was hebl in St. Paul’s Schoolroom last evening. Mr H. 0. Wake occupied the chair. The Rev. Douglas /spoke enthusiastically of Mr Elliot’s work in the town while other laudatory references were made by Messrs Reynolds, Rickard, Douthwaite, Moss ! aiid Johy, the latter presenting their guest with an illuminated address and a purse oi
sovereigns. Parishioners Moot. —The annual meeting of the parishioners of AH Saints’ Church was held in the schoolroom last evening, the vicar, Rev. Hugh Leach, presiding. The election of officers ’ resulted as follows Vicar’s warden, Mr E. B. Alabin ; people’s warden, Mr W. Brav; vestry, Messrs Coubon, Good rick. Hills, Michel, Newman, Orr, Bnlfe, Robeek. Ward, White, Dr Mac: n< 1 row; auditors Mr ’L J- Elark , a i:d Winchester; Synodian, Mr H. L. Michel. Harbour Board Election—The result of the Harbour Board election jesid tod as follows:—Teichelmann 437 Perry "403 Baxter 332, Mclntosh 311, informal. “Plumpers” were recorded as follow Teichelmann 33, Baxter 28. Perry 7, Mclntosh 6. Women’s Benevolent Society—The monthly meeting of the Women s Benevolent Society took place yesterday afternoon. Present—Me-dames Smyth (chair), Holmes, Bock, Fowler, Toomey and Hughes. It was stated that three families had been given relief during the month. Mesdames Bock and Hughes were appointed visitor, for the month. Mining—lt was currently 'reported in town yesterday that the hundred acre block formerly known as Gnmmond and party’s special claim, at Seddon’s Terrace, and which lias been reserved by the Government for some yeans for any company bringing a water supply to Rimu and Black Creek, had been thrown open, and as a consequence several claims have been pegged out. Municipal Election —The interest in the municipal, elections, which take place shortly, grows apace as the day approaches- For Hie office of Mayor, it is unlikely toat Mr Michel will lie opposed, but a number ol no" aspirants to a seat at the Council table are mentioned, including, Messrs L Brown, H. M. Coulson, E. H. Robinson, F. McGregor, H. Jones, and H. Pros ton.
Bowls —A friendly game of bowls was played on Saturday afternoon on Mrs Duncan’s green between a Grevmoutli team consisting of Messrs Stenhouse, Smith, Kilgour and Cairney, and «om" local players Messrs Duncan, Wilson, Newman and Ben re.
Golf Club —Tlio annual meeting of the Hokitika Golf Club was held last even ins, Mr A - J - Morton presiding. 'Hie following committee was appointed:—Mesdames Aebeson and Wilson. Messrs J. C. Mefarlane, Morton Wtike, Newman and Wilmott. The following new memberw wore elooLod : Messrs. Stenhoiise, Bigg-Wither, W. H. Robinson, Aebeson. G. Moore and MeNausbton.
