WORKERS’ PROTEST
' FOREIGN RICK HANDLES. April 14. Protesting against being supplied with pick handled of foreign manufacture, the Mahora Hill of relief wirkers carried a resostatirig that the gang deplored ""▼hd action of the Wellington City Council : in sending on to a job articles of foreign manufacture when the same could be, and were, being made in New Zealand, and l “we will, particularly while the cry of ‘Lay New Zealandmade goodte’ is so glaringly brought neJ fore us, refuse to handle any such articles sent out on the job in the future.” The handles were sent to the job during the week, and. it is stated, bore labels inscribed, “Made in U.S.A. We sun ply the world.” The men believe that pick handles which compare favourably in price are made in the South Island. Inquiries as to the suitability of native timber for axe h?mdlei= have recently been made by the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Association.
