MEAT FOR NEEDY
GOVERNMENT PURCHASES .MADE WELLINGTON, April 13. The disclosure wais* made by the Hon. E. A. Ransom (Minister of Lands), during a speech in the House of Representatives last night that the meat recently purchased by the Government for the relief of necessitous cases during the winter had been acquired at a remarkably low figure. He said there had been no difficulty in buying beef at Id. a pound, and best- owe mutton at ljd ft pound. Those prices represented 30s a head for cattle, and Gs Gd a head for sheep Thule. those acquainted with the farmer's difficulties, would realise that if stock produced those prices onlv, ruination was ahead Air W.
