CONFERENCE
SECONDARY SCHOOIf BOARDS. -By Telegraph—Per Press A ssodation ) WELLINGTON, April 12. A conference of Secondary School Boards to-day, presided over by Dr. G. E. Thompson, Otago, considered recommendations of the National Expenditure Commission so far as they affected education. The general teerj ing was that assistance should be given to Government in the unenviable task it had to perform, It approved of the reduction of the capitation grant as a temporary measure. A recommendation there should be a more rigid system of examination for junior anil senior free places, brought forth a spirited protest by Mrs Barter, Wairarapa, who said' it would simply mean throwing in unemployment young people who would be better at .school, The only ones not to succeed would be children of the rich, and academically brilliant children. The proposal would simply mean transference of expense from one department te another and the country would benefit nothing. A short address on education economies was given by the Minister, Hon. Masters.
